Dual PSU and BISS available for Ericsson MX8400 Transport Stream Multiplexer

Announcing two major functionalities on the Ericsson MX8400 – Dual Hot Swap Power Supplies and BISS encryption.

Dual Hot Swap PSU
The MX8400 has been available with a single fixed PSU. Ericsson is introducing a new MX8400 chassis that supports a dual hot swap power supply.

Two versions of the MX8400 chassis are available. Care should be taken to ensure that the right part number is it will not be possible to upgrade from one chassis type to another:

  • MX8400/BAS – Original chassis with a fixed single PSU
  • MX8400/BAS/DPS – New chassis that supports dual hot swap PSU; comes with one PSU fitted.

An optional second power supply (MX8400/HWO/DPS) is required to turn the MX8400/BAS/DPS chassis into a hot swap PSU unit.

Whether the original chassis or the one with dual power supply is used, the multiplexing functionality as well as the number of option slots available between the two chassis are identical.

BISS
MX8400 has supported DVB CSA since its release in July 2007 and is integrated with a number of difference DVB CSA vendors.

Ericsson’s MX8400 now supports BISS encryption as well as DVB CSA. It is possible to have both these enabled on the MX8400 simultaneously. Furthermore it is possible to scramble services within a single transport stream with either BISS or DVB CSA. However it is not possible to scramble a service within a transport stream with both DVB CSA and BISS.

BISS can be enabled on the MX8400 by application of the appropriate licenses.

Comtech SLM-5650A Satellite Modem

Comtech EF Data’s SLM-5650A Satellite Modem is compliant with the strict requirements defined in MIL-STD-188-165A, modem types I, II, IV, V and VI for applications on DSCS, WGS and commercial satellites.

Data rates from 64 kbps to 155 Mbps and symbol rates from 32 ksps to 64 Msps are supported.

The modem provides standard MIL-STD-188-114 (EIA-530 / RS-422), and EIA-613 (HSSI) serial interfaces, and can be optionally configured to support G.703 and Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) serial interfaces. It can also optionally be equipped with a 4-port 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet Network Processor module that supports switching, routing and advanced Quality of Service protocols.

The SLM-5650A can be integrated with the Vipersat Management System (VMS) to provide fully automated network and capacity management. An AES-256 TRANSEC module, compliant with the FIPS-140-2 NIST standard is also available as an option. All traffic (including overhead and all VMS control traffic) is encrypted when using the TRANSEC module.

Advanced forward error correction (FEC) capabilities are a Comtech EF Data standard feature. Viterbi, Trellis, Concatenated Reed-Solomon, Sequential, and Turbo Product Codes are all supported.

Advanced FEC and modulation capabilities are integrated with the revolutionary DoubleTalk® Carrier-in- Carrier® bandwidth compression allowing for maximum state-of-the-art performance under all conditions. This combination of advanced technologies enables multi-dimensional optimization, allowing satellite communications users to:

  • Minimize required satellite bandwidth
  • Maximize throughput without using additional transponder resources

The Ericsson RX8252 Program Transcoder allows legacy systems to continue MPEG-2 operation whilst allowing the Programmer to distribute using MPEG-4 AVC compression by offering both dense and high quality transcoding from MPEG-4 AVC to MPEG-2.

Broadcasters and Programmers are continually looking to take advantage of technological advances that reduce their distribution costs. MPEG-4 AVC compression in conjunction with DVB-S2 satellite transmission is the perfect combination to achieve such transmission efficiency gains. However, many TV systems are locked into MPEG-2 technology for the foreseeable future by the deployed set-top box population.

The RX8252 Program Transcoder offers a high level of transcode density and sophistication. The RX8252 can be configured to enable up to 6 transcodes of any combination of HD to HD, HD to SD and SD to SD transcoding – allowing the programmer to address all tiers of service providers. The Ericsson SPR1100 Broadcast Stream Processor is a high density broadcast video processor for operators to launch additional television services to the home; manage and migrate to MPEG-4 AVC; simplify time-shift TV ingest processing; and enable cost efficient disaster recovery sites for business continuity.

Designed for video turnaround applications requiring video and audio transcoding or bit-rate changing, the Ericsson SPR1100 supports any-to-any MPEG-2/MPEG-4 AVC HD/SD transcoding for up to 24 HD or 72 SD video services, up to 144 stereo audio services, and can simultaneously generate Picture-in-Picture (PIP) service for all channels processed – all within a single 1RU rack space saving chassis. The processor is perfectly suited for Telco and Cable IPTV platforms and represents the most efficient in its class. In addition, it can serve as a high quality bit-rate changer allowing for lower overall bit-rates or VBR to CBR conversion for applications like time-shift TV ingest.
